Description:
System for the mixing (induction), aeration, and application of either Class A or Class B firefighting foams (certified as compliant with
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
11).
ImportantFeatures:
These systems are designed to mix foam concentrate in water at appropriate percentage rates to produce a foam solution. These induction (mixing) rates are typically selectable by the user. Depending upon the type of foam and its method of application, the solution is then aerated to produce a low, medium, or high expansion finished foam that is applied to the fire.
Systems may include air aspirating foam nozzles, non-aspirating foam nozzles, self-educting foam nozzles, foam proportioners, foam generators, in-line foam eductors, compressed air foam system (CAFS), and other similar equipment and accessories.
Operating Considerations:
Foam should be employed only after determination that the type of foam, induction rate, and application rate to be used are effective for the type of flammable/combustible liquid and operating environment. Induction and application equipment must have matched flow rates to insure proper induction of concentrate.
Foam should be used when water alone will not suffice as an extinguishing agent for flammable/combustible liquid fires or when vapor suppression of un-ignited spills is required. High expansion foam requires specialized appliances that will allow increased foam blanket production for greater effectiveness against fires in confined spaces such as holds, engine rooms, basements and aircraft hangers.
