Previous SEL Number: 07RD-04-SGND

Description: A mobile or fixed-site detector that can detect radiation at a stand-off distance of at least 50 feet and specify the type and location of radiation sources, while maintaining sufficient energy resolution and sensitivity to discriminate between normally-occurring radioactive materials, background and potential threats.

ImportantFeatures: May be mounted at a fixed site, or vehicle/vessel mounted. Some devices may also include isotope identification capability. Some products are designed as standalone detectors, while others may include network-based reporting, as well as capability for integration with existing Ethernet networks.

Operating Considerations: Consider power requirements. If external power is required, it may be via wired AC or DC connection, or obtained via Power-Over-Ethernet (POE) connection if the sensor is part of an Ethernet network. If Ethernet capabilities are used, each sensor will require an Ethernet network connection and a unique IP address.

If any type of networked system is deployed, the system should have multiple options for alert types and notification modes (PDAs, text messages, cell phone, etc.) Plan for location of central reporting capability and integration into SOP. Check security of network connections to be used, as well as reliability of power.

Training Requirements: Core Training: NFPA 470 Chapter 10.
Initial Training: Moderate (1-2 days)
Sustainment Training: Minimal (<1 day)
