ImportantFeatures: Minimum version should be:

- Windows 11
- Apple macOS 14 (Sonoma)
- Unix, Linux: Varies by vendor/distribution - check online for latest. However, note that particularly with Linux, the latest version may not be the most appropriate for production. Look instead for the latest version that offers Long Term Support (LTS) or equivalent. This is liklely to be the most recent stable version.
Unix: Varies with brand - check with vendor for current release.

Operating Considerations: Latest versions of desktop operating systems are not always the most stable. Consider mission requirements of intended use when evaluating stability. Consider Long Term Support (LTS) for mission critical workstations.
Conduct web research to find reviews prior to purchase.
Check provided browser for 128-bit encryption and SSL capability.
Carefully check minimum hardware requirements before any operating system purchase or upgrade.
64-bit operating systems, if compatible with hardware, will better utilize processor and memory resources.
Ensure that a process is in place for installing the latest patches. Every local host needs to be maintained at the latest patch levels for security purposes. Ideally, new updates should be tested in-house to ensure compatibility with applications prior to implementation. However, if this is not possible, automatic updates should be turned on, as the risk of a problem in the update is less than the risk of missing key security patches.
