Previous SEL Number: 04HW-02-STOR

Description: Devices that function as virtual drives for storage and transfer of files. Includes USB memory sticks and cards, flash drives, smart chips, etc.

ImportantFeatures: Minimum 32 GB storage for flash memory (thumb drives, SD Card, etc) and 1 TB for external hard drive.
Some products have on-board encryption (software or hardware based).
Drive emulation.
Compatibility with digital cameras.
USB 2.0 compatibility. (Firewire, Lightning, or USB 3.0 interface desirable for external hard drives, when supported by hosts)

Operating Considerations: Consider security (device access and content), and use devices with encryption capability where appropriate. Note that some agencies forbid the use of thumb drives due to security concerns. Use caution when allowing access to devices on critical networks.
Check driver requirements.
Some devices may fit cameras but require a reader to interface with PC.
Consider ruggedized models to ensure durability for field use.

Check power requirements. May need external power for some units, as host notebook/desktop may not have sufficient power or ports to handle all connected devices.
Certain types of media will respond better to disc speed >=7200 RPM. Also, 5400 should be considered a minimum speed when planning to handle large files such as video.
