Previous SEL Number: 04AP-10-EMCS

Description: Communication system for use by emergency medical personnel that aids in triage, treatment, and transport of victims by providing a framework for data capture and exchange. Using smart phone or tablet devices and Internet connectivity, these systems provide menu-based entry of critical patient information, and interactive transmission of this data to hospital resources. Such systems may also provide interactive video and telemedicine support to medical responders, as well as aid selection of transport destination based upon patient requirements and destination facilities.

This functionality may also be obtainable via subscription as a cloud-based service, as opposed to purchasing software. However, special security considerations apply for data stored remotely, including HIPAA requirements. See 04AP-11-SAAS for further information.

ImportantFeatures: System will likely be Internet-based, and require network connectivity to run associated app on phone or tablet.
May include 2-way video for communications and telemedicine, vehicle location reporting, and automated selection of destination hospital based upon pre-loaded criteria.

Operating Considerations: Consider requirements for participation by destination hospitals and possible requirements for purchase of compatible devices or licenses.
Evaluate pre-loaded options for describing patient type and symptoms, and whether custom information can be loaded based upon local requirements.
Consider operational integration with existing systems and practices, particularly regarding vehicle dispatch and policies regarding selection of hospital destinations.

Training Requirements: Per manufacturer's specifications.
