Title: Tape, Protective Garment Interface

Last Updated: 7/8/2022 2:01:49 PM

Previous SEL Number: 01ZA-06-TAPE

Description: Tape used to ensure positive garment closure (attachment) at component interfaces such as glove/sleeve or leg/boot. This tape is only intended to prevent separation of components in order to reduce potential for direct contact with contaminants on underlying surfaces.

ImportantFeatures: Tape should be moisture resistant and strong enough to insure positive closure, but not so strong as to damage ensemble components during doffing (tapes that have strong adhesives may tear clothing materials when removed) . These items will NOT prevent chemical exposure/contamination except to the extent of preventing opening of areas between components during use.

Operating Considerations: Caution should be used in hazardous chemical environments, since hazardous chemicals can erode the adhesive in certain types of tape.

No testing standard exists for these materials. Although some outer layers of tapes may have been tested for chemical resistance, no testing has been done to insure chemical compatibility of the adhesive material itself. Therefore, these items should not be considered for positive chemical resistance.

Organizations using this type of tape should develop procedures for consistently applying tape to provide closure of interface areas in components and also address methods for allowing the tape to be removed without exposing the wearer. For example, leaving a folded over tab at the end of tape run can aid in its removal.

When training, painter's blue tape can be used to ensure no damage to garments. However, this tape is not moisture resistant and should not be used in real hazardous environments.

Organizations are encouraged to identify protective clothing and ensemble products that provide effective interfaces without relying on the use of tape.
