Title: Footwear, Medical Care Facility, NFPA 1999

Last Updated: 9/23/2018 3:53:02 PM

Previous SEL Number: 01EM-04-FTWF

Description: Medical care facility protective footwear (certified as compliant with NFPA 1999).

ImportantFeatures: Medical care facility footwear is intended for use at medical care facilities where the lower risk of physical hazards permits the use of footwear that does not meet the toe impact and compression resistance and sole puncture resistance specified in ASTM F 2413, Standard Specification for Performance Requirements for Foot Protection. The footwear is also not required to be as high as emergency medical footwear (i.e., ankle coverage is not required). However, medical care facility footwear still must provide the same material barrier and integrity performance criteria specified for emergency medical footwear.

Operating Considerations: Medical care footwear should be used whenever the potential for blood or body fluid contact exists under the controlled settings of a hospital or other first receiver medical facility. The interface between the footwear and the bottom of the pants or coverall should provide resistance to inward leakage from incidental splashes of liquids. If physical hazards exist, then NFPA 1999 emergency medical protective footwear should be worn instead. Medical care facility footwear may not protect against airborne pathogens. Use considerations are provided in OSHA Title 29 CFR Sections 1910.132 and 1910.1030; NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program; and NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program.

Training Requirements: Core Training: OSHA 1910.132.
Initial Training: Minimal (<1 day)
Sustainment Training: Minimal (<1 day)
