Description: Emergency medical protective footwear covers (certified as compliant with NFPA 1999).

ImportantFeatures: Footwear covers are rubber, textile, or plastic-based materials that are shaped into a cover that can be worn over boots. Footwear covers are intended to provide additional protection from contamination and, consequently, are disposable after use. Footwear covers compliant with NFPA 1999 meet all barrier requirements of NFPA 1999-compliant footwear including material viral penetration resistance and overall liquid tight integrity, but rely on physical protection from inner footwear (such as impact and puncture protection). Footwear covers must further meet minimum physical hazard resistance criteria and provide some traction to prevent slipping.

Operating Considerations: Footwear covers should not interfere with ensemble wearing. The wear surface of the footwear cover should provide some level of traction to prevent slipping. The footwear cover design should not allow penetration of liquids through the top of the cover. Consequently, the footwear cover should be worn on the ensemble in a fashion that will prevent any liquid entry at the top of the footwear, and have an effective interface between the footwear cover and any lower torso garment if liquid exposure in that area is a concern. NFPA 1999-compliant footwear covers may not protect against airborne pathogens. Use considerations are provided in OSHA Title 29 CFR Sections 1910.132 and 1910.1030; NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program; and NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program.
