Description:
Single-use emergency medical eye and face protection device (certified as compliant with
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
1999).
ImportantFeatures:
Single-use eye and face protection devices can include splash-resistant eyewear such as faceshields or hoods with visors that are intended for a single use and do not meet the requirements for a medical mask (e.g., surgical mask), and that cannot be qualified against the ASTM standard (F2100-11) on medical masks. Unlike multiple-use devices, the requirements of
ANSI
American National Standards Institute
Z87.1 are not mandatory for these single-use devices. Eye and face protection device materials are tested for viral penetration resistance and the overall device is tested in a simulated spray test for liquid tight integrity. Hood materials must also meet the requirements for single-use garments in
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
1999, which include minimum physical strength testing.
Operating Considerations:
The selected eye and face protection device should provide protection to the face from direct impingement of blood or body fluids, or subsequent runoff. A combination of eye and face protection devices may be used to meet this level of protection. These devices are intended for a single use and must be disposed of following use. Faceshields by themselves are not primary eye protection, and may not protect the eyes against all liquid or aerosol exposures. Eye and face protection devices are not respirators and will not protect against airborne pathogens. Use considerations are provided in OSHA Title 29
