Previous SEL Number: 04HW-03-SWCH

Description: Network switching device.

ImportantFeatures: Wide variance in size, capacity, and price. Gigabit switches are now the preferred minimum.
Managed switches offer custom features such as virtual local area networks (VLANs), selectable port speed, and security functions.
Some devices are available with integrated Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).

Operating Considerations: To avoid performance degradation, ensure that any switch added to an existing network is compatible with the network speed (e.g., gigabit networks should use gigabit switches throughout).
Smaller switches now used in place of hubs, providing better performance.
Consider environmental range specifics (particularly heat limits) and number of ports. If UPS is built-in, consider need to monitor and periodically replace battery.
Note that the speed of the slowest switch or router in the network path will determine the speed of any connection to the Internet - for example, installing a switch with Gigabit capacity will not increase Internet access if the router being used "above" it is not Gigabit capable - conversely, installing a slower switch between a computer and a Gigabit router will mean that the Internet connection will operate at the slower speed.
