Operating Considerations: Check processor speeds carefully. Comparison is not linear across differing processor sets, and there are wide performance variations across the same processor family, indicated by suffix information (e.g., Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 processor 155H).
Consider intended use of system. Ensure that the usable screen size is sufficient for planned applications - ensure usability without an external monitor even if an external monitor is planned as the normal configuration. If the system is to be used primarily for computationally demanding applications (plume modeling, etc.) a minimum processor specification of a 13th Generation Intel i7 (or equivalent) and 32GB RAM is recommended.
Check version of operating system delivered with device. (See 04SW-01-OSSW for workstations). Many less expensive notebooks are delivered with "Home" versions of operating systems (as opposed to the "Professional" versions, which generally offer more robust networking and device control). Check for operating system upgrade options.
Consider ruggedization, battery life.
Check input/output ports carefully. Assess your requiremets for ports such as USB 3.0, USB-C, HDMI, etc. Adapters may be required for external displays, phone charging, and other essential taks. Many laptops no longer have a serial port (DB-9), which can be essential for integration of some interfaces (radio programming, sensor upload/download, etc.). USB-Serial device/adapter may be necessary.
Check for compatibility issues between your new product and the computer(s) with which it will be interfacing.
Ensure that a process is in place for installing the latest patches. Every local host (including tablets) needs to be maintained at the latest patch levels for security purposes. Ideally, new updates should be tested in-house to ensure compatibility with applications prior to implementation. However, if this is not possible, automatic updates should be turned on, as the risk of a problem in the update is less than the risk of missing key security patches.
