Description:
Systems for positive identification of personnel as a prerequisite for entering restricted areas or accessing information systems.
This functionality may also be obtainable via subscription as a cloud-based service using a web browser interface or a mobile app, as opposed to purchasing software. However, special security considerations apply for data stored remotely. See 04AP-11-SAAS for further information.
ImportantFeatures:
May utilize multiple technologies including photo comparison, voiceprint, fingerprint, handprint, retinal scan, and interactive personal identification number (PIN) and cipher/code recognition system.
See also Items 05AU-00-BIOM, 04AP-07-CRED.
Operating Considerations:
Should include at least "two-factor" identification, e.g., two of the following:
1) Something you have (an access card)
2) Something you know (a PIN number)
3) Something you are (something unique to you, such as a fingerprint).
Consider systems that are compliant with FIPS Publication 201-1.
Consider system's "reach-back" to other databases and capability for remote authentication.
