Title: Network, Acoustic Sensor Triangulation

Last Updated: 11/9/2023 8:59:28 PM

Previous SEL Number: 14SW-01-ASTN

Description: A network consisting of some number of deployed acoustic sensors and one or more processing nodes for data integration and analysis. Such networks can be "tuned" to one or more ranges of frequencies to detect sounds such as gunshots, heavy weapons discharge, explosions, MANPAD launches, vehicle noises, etc., and utilize acoustic triangulation to provide accurate location data. Such networks can be wired, wireless, or hybrid, and are capable of operation near critical infrastructure assets or in wide areas.

ImportantFeatures: Ability to interface with dispatch, GIS, and other systems to provide integrated situational awareness and rapid response. Some systems will have the capability to utilize existing network infrastructure, minimizing deployment costs.
Systems may be designed as a rapid-deployment system using portable sensors, a permanent-mount system, or a hybrid. May also utilize mobile sensors that report their location (man-portable or vehicle-mounted). Ability to record event audio for immediate replay or future forensic analysis is critical.

Operating Considerations: Consider power and alternate/backup power requirements, as well as mounting requirements for fixed sensors.
Carefully consider mission requirements such as area to be covered, type(s) of events and their priority, and type of coverage (mobile, fast-deployment, or permanent) desired.
Verify ability of system to integrate with existing dispatch, GIS, or other appropriate systems before purchase.
Consider platform requirements and portability of display software, as well as manpower requirements for monitoring.
Verify capability to use existing network infrastructure if desired. For wireless networks, check for RF interference issues and compatibility with existing wireless network(s) before deployment.
