Description: Equipment used to communicate emergency medical information between non-English speaking, hearing-impaired, or visually-impaired patients (or patient representatives) and emergency medical, hospital or public health providers.

ImportantFeatures: May be a simple laminated communication board, or an electronic device.
Current electronic devices are accurate, efficient, and portable. Generally easy to use with written instructions. Easy to maintain. Minimum accessories, reprogramming or adjustments needed.


Operating Considerations: For electronic devices, consider power and IT interface requirements, including compatibility and interoperability within local medical and health system. Ability to rapidly request and receive key information about a cause, symptom, and treatment of a medical condition, and to request and receive key information about potential allergies, adverse effects or counter-indications before providing emergency pharmaceuticals.
Consider ability to work in adverse conditions such as natural disaster, loss of utility power, darkness, etc.
Consider HIPAA requirements and privacy, particularly if using cloud-based functionality. Review Terms of Service carefully - privacy issues can exist even in so-called "HIPAA-compliant" products.


Training Requirements: Core Training: ASTM F1031-22, NFPA 450, NFPA 470 (within medical scope of practice).
Initial Training: Minimal (<1 day)
Sustainment Training: Minimal (<1 day) per certification cycle
