Description:
An explosive detection system that utilizes cloths, papers, strips or other media to wipe or otherwise contact a surface to collect a sample. The sampling medium is then placed in or near a device that detects/identifies an explosive based upon its unique signature. Sampling technologies include, but are not limited to vapor and particle analysis via Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS), Amplifying Fluorescent Polymers, and colorimetric analysis.
DIQCode: [D,I]
ImportantFeatures:
Fixed-facility screening device. Multiple technologies available, and specific techniques and sampling media will be associated with each technology.
May also have chemical detection capability.
Operating Considerations:
Sampling techniques and media may vary widely, and media (swipes, smart cards, etc.) may be proprietary to a specific product or brand. Consider price of consumables when making purchase decision.
For some equipment types, test results are highly dependent upon proper swipe technique. Product-specific training may be essential.
Some technologies perform better on certain classes of chemicals/explosives. Consider the threat profile as part of the technology selection decision.
Some devices contain radioactive sources. Devices with radioactive sources require periodic wipe tests and have associated licensing and transportation issues.
Requires presence of particulate matter.
Requires regular calibration by trained technician.
