Title: Detector, Multi-sensor Meter, Point, Chemical

Last Updated: 3/21/2024 10:20:44 AM

Previous SEL Number: 07CD-01-DPMG

Description: Multi-sensor meter with minimum of O2 and LEL for point chemical detection.  Includes both portable and wearable sensors.
DIQCode: [D,I,Q]

ImportantFeatures: Each sensor designed for different operation: O2, % of LEL, CI2, CO, H2S, etc.
Passive diffusion or active sampling pump.

NOTE: Organizations purchasing and individuals using these items must use due diligence to evaluate not only the instrument's capabilities and limitations, but also that of each individual sensor. Sensors for combustible gases/vapors (e.g. Infrared, catalytic bead) and toxic chemicals sensors (e.g. infrared and electro-chemical) all have specific capabilities and limitations. The buyer/user must have a comprehensive understanding of both the instrument and each sensor's operating parameters.

The InterAgency Board D&D SubGroup is currently developing a position paper to provide guidance in selection of these devices. This position paper is anticipated by the 2nd quarter of calendar year 2024. In the interim, the IAB is providing links (see below) to three guidance documents from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The information in these documents, as well as information gained from subject matter experts, will be used in the development of this position paper.

Operating Considerations: Requires periodic calibration; check manufacturer's recommendations for frequency.
Calibration gases require special transportation.
Many sensors have multiple cross-sensitivities that can result in false positive or can be leveraged to potential identify other compunds present on a qualitative-only basis.
May be adversely affected by atmospheres with acid or alakine vapors/gases.
Subject to environmental limitations such as temperature and humidity - check manufacturer's specifications.
Shelf life dependent on type of sensor.
Moderate sensitivity.
