Description:
Items of protective equipment that are worn by the wildland fire fighter to facilitate the carrying of gear (certified as compliant with
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
1977).
ImportantFeatures:
Wildland fire fighting load carrying equipment includes webbing, belts, backpacks and other carrying devices that permit the wildland fire fighter to carry equipment without creating a hazard in the event of high heat exposure. Load carrying equipment is subjected to heat resistance testing to demonstrate that is will not melt, ignite, or otherwise degrade with exposed to high heat.
Designed to be worn over wildland
PPE
Personal Protective Equipment
and should not inhibit the effectiveness of the PPE.
Operating Considerations:
Wildland fire fighting includes fire suppression and property conservation in woodlands, forests, grasslands, brush, prairies, and other such vegetation, or any combination of vegetation that is involved in a fire situation but is not within buildings or structures. However, wildland fire fighting increasingly involves an urban interface, which requires protection to structures that are endangered by wildland fires.
Wildland fire fighting load carrying equipment (worn in addition to clothing items) is designed to minimize hazards to the wearer from igniting, melting, dripping, or falling apart in the event of a high heat exposure. These items should be designed to accommodate the specific equipment items being carried by the wildland fire fighter and not interfere with fire suppression or property conservation activities. Use considerations are provided in OSHA Title 29

Code of Federal Regulations
Section 1910.132.
