Title: Ensemble, Protective, Structural Fire Fighting with Optional Particulate and Liquid Protection, NFPA 1971

Last Updated: 7/21/2023 3:06:43 PM

Previous SEL Number: 01SL-01-ENSM

Description: Structural fire fighting protective ensemble with optional particulate and liquid protection (certified as compliant with NFPA 1971).

ImportantFeatures: The option for particulate and liquid protection only applies to ensembles where the manufacturer has specified garments, helmet, gloves, footwear, and a particulate blocking hood together with a specific SCBA as part of an overall protective system. These ensembles are designed with interface areas or devices to provide overall protection of the wearer against the penetration of both particulates and liquids under specific conditions (see Operating Considerations below).

All elements used in these ensembles must meet the respective criteria required for each element, where the exception is that selected hoods must meet the optional particulate blocking requirements. Full ensembles are subjected to an overall evaluation of inward particulate penetration and overall ensemble liquid integrity.

Operating Considerations: Structural fire fighting includes rescue, fire suppression, and property conservation in buildings, enclosed structures, vehicles, marine vessels, or like properties that are involved in a fire or emergency situation. The garments should be fitted to the individual to provide complete protection in all wearer positions. Use considerations are provided in OSHA Title 29 CFR Sections 1910.132 and 1910.1030, and NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program. Selection, care, and maintenance requirements are provided in NFPA 1851, Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting.

The particulate and liquid protection option is intended to provide fire fighters with protection from particulates and liquids encountered on the fireground that bring specific contaminants in contact with the firefighter's body. This type of firefighter protective ensemble addresses fire service concerns of repeated exposures to carcinogens, skin toxic, or other hazardous substances that are capable of causing long term health issues.

Training Requirements: Core Training: NFPA 1851, NFPA 470 Chapters 6, 8, 10 as applicable, OSHA 1910.120, 1910.132, 1910.134.
Initial Training: Moderate (1-2 days)
