Description:
Battle dress uniforms (BDUs), coveralls and jumpsuits that are worn during tactical operations and are constructed of fabrics that will not contribute to injuries in the event of exposure to heat, spark, or flash fire. Certified as compliant with
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
1975 or
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
2112.
ImportantFeatures:
Coveralls or separate shirts and pants constructed of flame-resistant fabric or 100% cotton. Uniforms meeting the baseline requirements of
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
1975 show no melting and sticking when tested under high heat conditions. When garments meet the optional flame resistance requirements, fabrics meet minimum industry flame resistance requirements indicating that fabrics will not continue to burn once ignited and removed from the flame source. These fabrics also do not melt or drip. Similarly, garments meeting the
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
2112 criteria are non-melting and flame resistant and are also required to meet thermal insulation requirements that demonstrate appropriate levels of protection during accidental flash fire.
Operating Considerations:
Station/work uniforms are NOT protective garments or primary protective garments. Station/work garments serve as normal duty/task clothing for personnel that may, in the course of their duties, be exposed to heat, spark or fire and experience thermal injuries. Personal protective equipment (PPE) selected to protect users from the specific hazards associated with a given incident may be worn in conjunction with station/work uniforms. For example, structural firefighting gear and chemical protective clothing are often worn over station/work uniforms. When selected, uniforms or other clothing should be long sleeve and full pants.
Even though
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
2112 is not intended for emergency response applications, garments certified to this standard are suitable as flame-resistant garments because they are tested to criteria that meet or exceed the flame-resistant garment option requirements in
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
1975.
