Title: Ensemble, Emergency Medical, Single-Use, NFPA 1999

Last Updated: 11/30/2018 2:48:54 PM

Previous SEL Number: 01EM-06-EMES

Description: Single-use emergency medical protective ensemble, including a specific single-use emergency medical protective garment, the use of any NFPA 1999-certified single-use emergency medical examination gloves (two pairs -- inner and outer), specific multiple-use emergency medical footwear, multiple-use medical care facility footwear, or single-use emergency medical footwear covers, specific eye and face protection devices, and filtering facepiece respirator (certified as compliant with NFPA 1999).

ImportantFeatures: NFPA 1999 single-use protective ensembles are intended to provide full body protection against liquid-borne or airborne highly infectious diseases. These ensembles are made up of multiple elements including garments, gloves, footwear, eye/face protection, and respirators that are generally single use. Garments may be full body or multipiece clothing that are configured together to offer the wearer liquid integrity from penetrating liquids. For these ensembles, the wearer has a pair of examination gloves worn under the sleeve opening and a second pair of examination gloves worn over the sleeve and over the first pair of examination gloves. Head, face, and eye protection is provided by the combination of separate or attached hoods, eye/face protection devices and respirators (generally filtering facepieces, though higher forms of respiratory protection can be used). Foot protection is offered by attached garment socks with an outer boot (multiple-use emergency medical footwear or multiple-use medical facility footwear or regular footwear that is covered by a single-use footwear cover). Footwear certified to other standards (NFPA 1951, 1971, 1991, 1992, and 1994) is also acceptable.

Operating Considerations: NFPA 1999 single-use emergency medical protective ensembles are intended to be worn for exposure conditions where first responders may encounter a highly infectious disease transmittable by either liquid or airborne contact. These ensembles offer adequate physical hazard resistance and limited durability and are intended only for one-time use. Use considerations are provided in OSHA Title 29 CFR Sections 1910.132 and 1910.1030; NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program; and NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program.
